Muslim Mumpreneur Series #6 - Atiya Shah

Founder of Every Cloud Silver Lining

In the Anafiya Muslim Mumpreneur Series we take a rare insight into the lives of the superheroes who are running businesses alongside full-time motherhood.

Every Cloud Silver Lining

Please introduce yourself

I'm Atiya and i'm based in the North West, near Manchester UK. I am a single mum to two boys, who are 4 and 5 years old.

Tell us a bit about your business

I started the business in summer of 2015, as a way to keep myself occupied and motivated. I had recently separated from my husband, taken leave from my job at a financial services provider. With so much going on I needed an escape. I loved doing the window displays at my sisters boutique and she would kindly give me full reign, bar the budget! This is where the idea of Silver Lining started and evolved.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced?

Getting my business recognised and informing potential customers of my product range. Still working on it, however, being active on social media, offering good customer service has lead to positive recognition and referrals.

How do you balance it all? Family and work?

I don't know, still working on that. I can go either way at times, sometimes too much business and sometimes not enough focus. I did note that i was becoming too attached to my phone, which has resulted in me now switching off my wifi and 4g when i'm going to bed so I have to go to sleep instead of wasting time on my phone. I also have got into the routine of doing any additional work during the evenings once the kids are in bed.

Have you got any advice for aspiring mumpreneurs?

Its not easy, don't think it'll be a walk in the park. Setting up your own business requires you to invest a lot of your time, which does means you will be sacrificing some quality time with your family. However, I find being present at home, and being able to drop my work to assist my children or to just listen to them, as typically it'll be just when you're in the middle of replying to an important email or doing some accounts that they will remember why they resembled a mud monster when they got back from nursery.
